Beautiful Creatures review

Hi.

Yesterday, I went to see Beautiful Creatures in the cinema. After sitting through the 2 hour film, I felt no strong emotions towards the film but I did think that it was a tory and a good watch for those who enjoy twilight and other teenage romance films. The film is not a rom-com but, for me, at moments I found it light-hearted and slightly humorous.

The story line can be quite confusing but to sum it up, Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) has had reoccurring dreams about a girl in the field where a war took place many years before. He never got closer and could never see her face as her hair would always cover it. In the new school year in  an isolated town in America, a new girl arrives called Lena (Alice Englert). She is instantly looked down on by other classmates apart from Ethan as she appears to be the girl in his dreams. Eventually he discovers that she is a 'caster' but her fate is about to be decided on her 16th birthday to whether she would be an evil or good caster. Throughout the story, Ethan and Lena's friendship soon turns into a stronger and stronger relationship which raises more difficulties for Lena as a curse makes it likely that she will turn evil meaning that she loses something she desperately wants either way.

This film is filled with twists and turns until the end which keeps the audience captivated. Although the plot isn't constantly changing and the audience doesn't have to work at the film to understand it, the audience does always have to focus on the film or get lost. The storyline, however was virtually unpredictable which is hard to find in movies. I think that right at the end, the ending was obvious but it if it didn't happen, the film wouldn't have been complete.

Alden Ehrenreich plays Ethan very well and matches Ethan's personality which, I imagine, is hard to do as Ethan's mood tends to change throughout the film. Emma Thompson, who played Mrs Lincoln and Sarafine (the nasty mother of Lena) plays them especially well and is as gripping and versatile an actress as ever. The British actress who played Professor Trelawney and Nanny McPhee makes a great Sarafine and religious Mrs Lincoln and brings them to life.

Beautiful Creatures is a teenage film, often compared to Twilight and is thought as an almost replacement for it. In my opinion, it is sweeter, cheerier and has more depth than the Twilight Saga.
The film is based on a book series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl which, after watching the film, I will try and read.

The film is great and perfect for teenagers who are fans of Twilight and other stories like it. I give it a rating of 7/10
