Onesie Direction

Yes I copied the title from Miranda Hart when she created a girl group for Comic Relief but it was just too strangely appropriate to not use. Over the past few weeks it has come to me that  One Direction have actually been setting a lot of trends here in the UK over the past few years. Probably the most obvious example ONESIES!

Remember their video diaries when the were still in the X Factor House in 2010? Well one of them featured the boys in what they called 'giant baby grows'; 2 years later, a onesie was almost a staple item in any teenagers wardrobe. But now they don't just come in different colours, dinosaur and penguin onesies are just some that are up for grabs.

Also, around the year 2011 if I recall correctly, our shops were filled with chinos, Particularly red and beige ones. My thinking is that if the group didn't just catch the trend early, than they might have started something with the trousers. Especially as their music video 'What Makes You Beautiful' has been viewed 364,267,162 times (as of 10th April 2013) and they were all wearing them.

Yesterday, I went into Topshop and was mildly surprised that there was a baseball jacket included in the collection. When looking at it, I immediately thought of Zayn Malik and his 'look'. It wasn't the first time that I had seen a jacket like this in the shops and it seems that Niall Horan has adopted the style too of late

For as long as I can remember, cardigans on young men were considered to be slightly odd and...old fashioned. That was until last year when cardigans on men created a sense of sophistication and was probably exaggerated more by the 'geek' style that came into trend amongst teenagers. How that came into trend I don't know but big, black, round glasses were immensely popular as well has checked shirts buttoned right to the top.

Of course the 1D could have just jumped onto the bandwagon early but I think that even if they hadn't started the trend, they at least contributed to it.

Make of the month- Skater Skirt

I am going to start  putting things that I have made onto my blog monthly to give you inspiration and to adapt what I have made to suit you. This month I will put 2 makes on in separate posts. For this entry, I would like to show you my black and white polka dot skirt that I have made from a pattern. In England, the 60's fashion trends are coming back for a vintage feel and our shops are currently filled with monochrome patterns (such as black and white vertical stripes). This era was more fun and daring than the previous decades in fashion. Something that was exaggerated in London Fashion week is the thought that everyone would be wearing skater skirts this year and they are already starting to emerge on the clothing rails in our favourite high street stores.
My outfit

The reason I made this skirt, however, is because I was shopping in River Island with my mum when I showed her a skater skirt that I thought looked really nice. I told her about how it was coming into trend yet instead letting me try it on, she looked at the seams and suggested that I made one myself. I had made a couple of items of clothing in the past but this was the most excited I had ever got about making clothes. 5 days later and I am typing this scene whilst sitting in the very skirt that I was excited about making.

Strips of material can be used to make a hairband
The skirt is very simple, yet with this material, bright or eye catching. It is very easy to dress up or down and with it you could wear either pastels and neutrals or bright colours. It wasn't that hard to make either. As a relatively new dress maker, it was more time consuming for me as I had to tack certain parts before sewing. The top I have put it with and the way I have tucked it in gives a slight 50's feel to the look (which is good for me as I love the 50's style). The head band I put in my hair is literally the bottom of the skirt. I had to cut it down to make the bottom of it even so randomly I tied it to my head...and I kind of liked it. The make up I put with it was designed to liven the whole look up a bit yet keeping to the 50's style what with the black eye liner.

Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox

Bruno Mars' most recent album is Unorthodox jukebox. My reactions when hearing the songs for the first time were that the songs were very different to his last album. Despite this, I could still hear similarities in the songs which would define Mars' 'style'. This would possibly be songs with a strong beat with not an extensively long intro. The texture and instruments used vary throughout each track which at times can make the music seem quite stop-start. This is intensified as silence or pauses are experimented with occasionally. This keeps each song interesting as, with Locked Out of Heaven for example, instead of listening to the lyrics of the song, I will in fact be listening to the drumbeat of the... unusual vocals in the background of parts of the song. However, I often find myself chanting along to that bit.

I find the tracks on this album quite heavy which is the opposite of what people would generally listen to coming up to this time of year, but with exams coming up, I think that this CD could be a great way to relax, and if you can concentrate with music on, then to work to as well. Personally, I think that this album is suitable for many situations perhaps apart from kids parties perhaps.  My reasoning is that Unorthodox Jukebox has a few swear words and the topics of the songs could be regarded as rude. I generally don't like this in songs yet this album seems to be an exception.

Throughout the CD, you hear many different genres of music, you could easily dance to Treasure, When I Was Your Man is stripped back and is a sincere yet undeniably sweet track. If I am totally honest, Show Me constantly reminds me of Hawaii (and doing the wave motions to the side with my arms) which is where he lived before becoming an international star.

I love this album so much! It has taken permanent residence in my CD player and I doubt that it will be moving any time soon. I would give this album a score of 8.5/10.

Beautiful Creatures review

Hi.

Yesterday, I went to see Beautiful Creatures in the cinema. After sitting through the 2 hour film, I felt no strong emotions towards the film but I did think that it was a tory and a good watch for those who enjoy twilight and other teenage romance films. The film is not a rom-com but, for me, at moments I found it light-hearted and slightly humorous.

The story line can be quite confusing but to sum it up, Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) has had reoccurring dreams about a girl in the field where a war took place many years before. He never got closer and could never see her face as her hair would always cover it. In the new school year in  an isolated town in America, a new girl arrives called Lena (Alice Englert). She is instantly looked down on by other classmates apart from Ethan as she appears to be the girl in his dreams. Eventually he discovers that she is a 'caster' but her fate is about to be decided on her 16th birthday to whether she would be an evil or good caster. Throughout the story, Ethan and Lena's friendship soon turns into a stronger and stronger relationship which raises more difficulties for Lena as a curse makes it likely that she will turn evil meaning that she loses something she desperately wants either way.

This film is filled with twists and turns until the end which keeps the audience captivated. Although the plot isn't constantly changing and the audience doesn't have to work at the film to understand it, the audience does always have to focus on the film or get lost. The storyline, however was virtually unpredictable which is hard to find in movies. I think that right at the end, the ending was obvious but it if it didn't happen, the film wouldn't have been complete.

Alden Ehrenreich plays Ethan very well and matches Ethan's personality which, I imagine, is hard to do as Ethan's mood tends to change throughout the film. Emma Thompson, who played Mrs Lincoln and Sarafine (the nasty mother of Lena) plays them especially well and is as gripping and versatile an actress as ever. The British actress who played Professor Trelawney and Nanny McPhee makes a great Sarafine and religious Mrs Lincoln and brings them to life.

Beautiful Creatures is a teenage film, often compared to Twilight and is thought as an almost replacement for it. In my opinion, it is sweeter, cheerier and has more depth than the Twilight Saga.
The film is based on a book series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl which, after watching the film, I will try and read.

The film is great and perfect for teenagers who are fans of Twilight and other stories like it. I give it a rating of 7/10

Make-up haul

I spent yesterday in town. I bought many things but I thought I would show you what I got in the make-up department. I visited Boots and Superdrug which are both UK drugstores as well as a Primark.

My first item is Maybelline's mascara, The Falsies. I was excited to buy this product as Tanya Burr, a YouTube beauty guru, highly recommends it. It makes your lashes look longer and after around 9 hours of wearing it today, it hasn't slipped down from my eyelashes onto my face. Considering that my eyelids are quite oily, it shows its lasting power and stubbornness. With its slightly curved brush to maximise coverage, I too would recommend this product as it possesses all the right qualities in a mascara. Boots- £7.99

My second is more of a hair accessory. The ' doughnut' is designed for putting your hair into a bun and giving it more volume. I can't review this item as I haven't worn it as my hair is frustratingly just too short to wear it but I'm looking forward to wearing it in the future. I got mine from Primark but you could get one elsewhere.I chose a medium-size one in black. At only £1.00, it was very good value. Primark- £1.00

Next is Nivea's tinted moisturising day cream. I wanted to buy one because, as a teenager, I decided that my skin is as good as it is ever going to be and I shouldn't waste it. This means that I don't own a foundation ( but I do have a concealer). But I bought the tinted moisturiser as it gives a lighter coverage while also moisturising my skin. After a while, it adopts a slight orange-fake tanned colour but nothing too noticeable. After 9 hours, it has now started to wear off. I am still impressed with it  and I think it would be good for those who are slightly self-conscious about their skin but don't want to invest in a foundation. It is also a lot cheaper than one too. Superdrug- £1.79

Sticking with a Nivea theme, my next item is Nivea's lip butters. Another YouTube guru, missglamorazzi, recommended this. My one is caramel cream. It only has a slight scent or flavour on your lips but in the pot it smells amazing! I was slightly surprised that it has a creamy texture in the pot which I think is an interesting but good characteristic. This was also cheap which makes it even more worth buying. It lasts for a while on your lips but doesn't feel like it is just sitting there doing nothing. These lip butters have recently been introduced to America. Superdrug- £1.49

Lastly but definitely not least is my NYC Applelicious glossy lip balm. Like the tinted moisturiser, I wanted to get a product that did good while also looking great on my face. But, before I start praising it, I'm not sure at exactly how much of a good lip balm it is. I was stunned and how pigmented the colour is. It could easily be a lipstick! I picked it up in the colour 'Blushing Golden' which I think is slightly too light for me but the next time I go into town, I will definitely pick up another one. They don't have a massive colour range which I personally think that they could work on and expand. Again, it was cheap and cheerful and definitely worth investing in. Superdrug- £2.49

Overall, I think my trip was a great success. I hope you found this post useful and would think about buying these products yourself.

Olly Murs -Right Place Right Time

As my first review I thought I would choose to review Olly Murs' album Right Place Right Time.  The songs in it depict a carefree attitude and although they have a youthful quality, it isn't so overpowering that it would repel adults in any way from enjoying them to.

It is a great playlist with lots of variation between the tunes of songs and the lyrics. For example What a buzz is very different from One of These Days. A proportion on the songs are happy and bouncy and most of them have a catchy chorus which is great to tap and sing to.
The first single, Army of two and Loud & Clear have intriguing intros have a very classical edge before leading into the melody which is quite controversial for Murs. In fact the intro of Army of Two is so unusual that I began to wonder whether I had definitely put the right CD in!

There is a noticeable contrast between the 'happy' and more emotional songs. Personally I prefer happier songs in general but Cry your heart out is one of my favourite singles on this CD. Even if Murs isn't singing this from the heart, the 'pain' in the song comes across through the tune and the texture of it which makes the song very effective and I find it hard not to hear it without singing the at least chorus. My other favourite is What A Buzz as it is an innocent song with a good melody and is the song that anyone would manage to hum to.

Out of the three albums Olly Murs has released, this has to be my favourite because the songs are all masterpieces in their own right. I extremely like this album and would recommend it to anyone who likes happy songs and pop songs. I give this album 8/10. I hope you enjoyed my first review and if you read to the end, thank you
